New Unit: Absolute Monarchs

This week we will begin a new Unit- Absolute Monarchs of Europe. Starting with the 16th Century we will examine the monarchs of Europe as they struggled to maintain their absolute hold on power.

We will look at what absolute monarchs are and their claim to authority. Then we will examine the Golden Age of Spain. Spain became the most powerful country in Europe under King Phillip II due to the vast amounts of gold & silver in their American colonies. We will see the great artists especially El Greco and Diego Velázquez.

We will also discuss Spain’s most famous writer Miguel de Cervantes who wrote one of the first and most famous novels Don Quixote de la Mancha. Afterwards, we will watch the movie version of the novel.
